With the beginning of the season 2008/09 Sebastian Weigle became Music Director of the Opera Frankfurt.
Furthermore, he has been the Music Director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona since September 2004, and he has conducted many new productions as well as many concerts there with great success. The opera critics of Barcelona elected him conductor of the season 2004/05 as well as 2005/06.
In Frankfurt, he made his debut with Salome in 2002/03, followed by the successful new productions of Frau ohne Schatten and Pique Dame as well as a very successful new production of Tiefland (2006).
Furthermore, opera engagements led him to the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Cincinnati Opera, the State Opera Dresden, to the Granada Festival and the Nationaltheater Mannheim, to the Vienna Volksoper, to Opera Australia in Sydney, and to Japan. He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera New York in 2000, and “OPERNWELT” magazine elected him „Conductor of the Year” for his outstanding success with Frau ohne Schatten in Frankfurt in 2003.
In January 2006 he made his successful debut at the Vienna State Opera with Beethoven´s Fidelio and he returned with Boris Godunow (2007/2008).
After his debut at the Bayreuth Festival with a new production of Meistersinger von Nürnberg in the summer 2007 and the successful production of Tiefland at the Vienna Volksoper in October 2007, he also followed invitations to Berlin, Hamburg, Leipzig, and Lyon, among others.
On the concert stage he worked with many acclaimed international orchestras, including the Staatskapelle Berlin, the Berlin Sinfonie-Orchester, the Deutsche Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden, and the Symphony Orchestras of Aalborg, Hamburg, Helsingborg, Jerusalem, and Trondheim. He furthermore conducted concerts in Granada, with the Hamburger Philharmoniker, the Rundfunkorchester BR Munich, the MDR, the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, the Niederösterreichische Tonkünstler, the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart and the RSO Vienna as well as in Tokyo, Melbourne and at the Grant Park Festival Chicago.
Born 1961 in Berlin, he received his musical education at the “Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler”. From 1997–2002 he held the position of First Staatskapellmeister at the Berlin State Opera, conducting a wide repertoire, and he became the Chief Conductor of the Young Philharmonic Orchestra Brandenburg (since 1993).
